Happy Birthday to you …

May 29th, 2002

Today is *the* birthday. We bought him some cds and some weatherproofing spray for the new boots. This morning we made up a tray with gifts, card and breakfast then took it in to my fellow. No singing since I am croaking like a frog at the moment. (of course that might have been an improvement on my normal voice *laugh*)

On our agenda today is dropping off the forms at the bank (had to get a card from fellow so I could leave his off there too) and shop for new bulbs for the living room lamp. This lamp is a major pain. The bulbs are fluorescent tubes and they die routinely. When the guys were putting together the new shelf, one of them (my guess is the kidlet *laugh*) hit the lamp and the bulbs popped. Of course the store we went to yesterday had every other size of bulb but the one we needed, so today I have to search for those. I will also bake a cake, clean and do laundry. The shelving unit is up and the tv in place. So now I just need to put in all the rest of the stuff. *laugh*

I used the new grill yesterday at dinner. It worked well and I think I can get used to cooking with it.

Mothers Day

May 27th, 2002

When I posted yesterday I had completely forgotten about Mother’s Day. After the kidlet had eaten and was engrossed in a second viewing of his ‘new’ Pooh movie, I crawled back in bed with his dad and dozed. A little voice called me insistently about 20 minutes later and I was sleeping so soundly that when I got out of bed to see what was wrong, I started to cry. I cried all the time I was cleaning up my poor little child who had a nasty bout of diarrhea but did make it to the bathroom almost in time. As I was washing him, he was patting me and telling me it was ok. *smile* I got back into bed, still sobbing and that woke my fellow. I think I was just exhausted. The pollens have really been bothering me for the past month and the last week has been horrid. Using inhalers 3 times a day as well taking antihistamines is just keeping me on my feet and functioning. So my fellow told me to sleep some and he and the kidlet left me in bed. I must have fallen asleep instantly because I don’t even remember the door shutting.

An hour later a little voice woke me and the kidlet handed me a plate with breakfast on it as his dad put a hot cup of coffee on the bedside table. I was surprised and wondered what precipitated this breakfast in bed treat. Then it hit me that this was Mother’s Day. *laugh* We all sat in bed and ate breakfast and then I got dressed for work. Felt much better after that sound sleep. We dropped the kidlet at his grandparents and my fellow took me to work, with a side trip to buy the electric grill. He waited with me and then drove me home as well, forfeiting his racing on tv. (Formula 1 racing every other Sunday is the only thing he watches regularly) We stopped and picked up an ice cream cake and some scratch tickets for his mom on the way back into town. We ate dinner with farmor and farfar, the men went and bought pizza *smile* and then had coffee and ice cream cake for dessert. My fellow had asked me for two envelopes for the tickets and I thought it was so he could give her one set and the kidlet the other, but actually it was a ‘one for her and one for me’ split. So we both scratched tickets and had fun doing it. (no winners in the lot but I passed the scratch bingo card on to the kidlet who would scratch a couple more spots and then call ‘bingo’)

It really was a wonderful day after my little cloudburst. *smile* Today I need to go to the bank and drop off a form and that is the entire agenda. *laugh* It rained some yesterday and again in the night so the pollen count seems to be down and my wheezy old chest is not sounding so bad this morning. We still have to assemble the new shelving unit and now we have the grill to put together as well. So it will be an exciting week.

Sunday morning

May 26th, 2002

The rest of our week was not really too hectic. We went to playgroup and shopped for a birthday gift for my fellow. He will be 25 next week and for the first time since I have known him, he wanted a party. So we planned one for yesterday and then hit the stores for new boots for him. 5 shoe stores later (we went to Upplands Väsby and in to Stockholm) we found boots right here in Märsta. *laugh* The kidlet was so good and never said a word to his dad about what we were shopping for or what we eventually bought.

So yesterday morning I was up at 0800 cleaning and preparing for guests. The kidlet slept until 1030 and his dad slept till 1330. All morning the kidlet kept asking when everyone was coming for pappa’s party. So when my fellow opened the bedroom door at 1330 to let the dog out of the room, we went in and the first thing the kidlet said was “happy birthday pappa, now you can open your boots!” *laugh* I almost fell over and told him pappa had to wait, but he opened the closet where the gift was and pointed to it and again told his dad that now he could have his boots. At that point I was laughing so hard I had to sit down.

We ate about 1645 and had crayfish, potatoes, salad, bread and cheese and other yummy things. Guests were my fellows’ parents, his uncle and his girlfriend, his sister and his cousin from Gällivare. We had a peppermint ice cream cake covered in chocolate sauce and sprinkles for dessert. (after the candle blowing out and singing of course *smile*) Gifts were varied, t-shirt, jeans and jean jacket, Southpark poster, boots *laugh* and a lovely wood finish tv centre/bookshelf unit from his parents. He really really liked them all.

He loved the boots, which look almost the same as the ones I bought him 5 years ago when we were in Canada (and which he has worn to death). The kidlet was so excited when he finally opened the gift and then he told that he was the one who took them to the cashier and paid for them. It doesn’t take a lot to make a child beam. Pappa tried on the boots and then carried the kidlet around while testing them. *smile*

After everyone went home, I cleaned up and then we settled the kidlet in bed. It was Eurovision night so we were camped out at the tv. *laugh* Well, actually we gravitated between tv and computers but since they are in the same room, that was no problem. I almost fell off my chair when Greece did their entry. Their costumes were like something the Borg would wear and the song was even more repetitious (password is now a forbidden word here) than that old Rick Springfield song my sister loved about the “hole in my heart”. Swedens’ entry was ok, but I have seen much better from here and had no illusions they would win. They rated high enough to be in next years contest, so we will wait and see. *smile* When the performer from Macedonia came out, my fellow told me that it was predicted online that she would take last place. I liked her song and thought she was a really pretty woman so I was glad the predictions were wrong. Latvia won, they had a good song and good performance. I also liked the entries from Austria (good song), Romania (great voices), Russia (cool) and Slovenia (just plain campy), among others. It was nice to see the different scenes depicting Estonia, a country I didn’t know so much about before. Eurovision is fun and I do like watching and giggling or ohhhing over the different songs.

This morning we are watching a Pooh movie. The kidlet crawled in to bed with us at 0730 to announce he had been up to pee in the bathroom. *laugh* After appropriate praise was dispensed, I put in a movie and gave him juice and cereal in hopes of getting a bit more sleep. Instead I got a little voice calling to give me a play by play of the movie, so here I am watching it. This is one that my aunt brought with her (she brought the remainder of his movies that were still in Canada at my grandparents). He asked if we could see the movie we rented and I explained we had taken it back but there was one here that belonged to him that he would like. He was one excited boy to discover that this old movie from home was the one we rented last month and watched incessantly for 3 days. *smile* I have one more Pooh movie in the box that he hasn’t seen for 2 years so that will be a nice surprise later in the week.

Today I will go and clean and the kidlet will go to his grandparents. I am hoping my fellow will pick me up from work and we can stop at Siba. My sister sent over money with my aunt with the stipulation to buy candy for the kidlet and something we would all enjoy. Siba has an electric grill on sale and it would be perfect (leaving 100 SEK for candy for the kidlet). *smile*

Anniversary

May 21st, 2002

Well the vaccuming is done, the dishes and the picking up is completed. I still have to make the beds (I stripped them all this morning) and then do laundry at 1730. Right now I am going to have a cup of coffee and relax.

It is a year ago today that I started my livejournal as well as a year ago today since my dad died. So much has happened over this past year, one of the best things being the people I have met through lj and developed friendships with. I have had a couple cries today but on the whole I have been thinking happy memories of my dad, something I do pretty much every day. *smile*

Lazy Day

May 21st, 2002

We have just been being totally lazy this morning. I looked in the mirror after dragging myself out of bed and saw this pale ghost face peering back, so I decided to rest some after all the action when Aunt Maud was here. The kidlet asked this morning when we could phone her, which surprised me. I thought he would have forgotten.

Over the past couple of weeks we have had lots of mail here. A dozen or so postcards arrived and Aunt Maud was surprised at the fact we get at least one card a day here.

Shauna sent a gorgeous handmade card. It is all black, red and purple with a really neat stamped picture of a girl/guitar. I love the cards that Shauna makes, she always put love into them. Thank you!

Angela sent a package of Girl Guide cookies! I did buy some from a girl from the US who was here in Sweden to visit and they were great, but they were not the vanilla and chocolate ones that I grew up. Angela very generously offered to send a box and even had to wrest them away from her kids to do it. *smile* Thank you! They are being doled out slowly here and we are all enjoying them. *smile*

Elizabeth sent a bunch of postcards, one of which featured John Travolta in his white suit, hand pointing to the heavens, in Saturday Night Fever. Thank you Elizabeth! I do so love this fellow.

My fellow has a birthday coming up soon and we need to shop for his gift this week. I know what I want, now I just need to find it. *laugh* Now I am off to pick up some and do up dishes, then will go back to relax mode. *smile*

Visit Update

May 20th, 2002

My aunts’ flight arrived in Toronto at 1444, so she should soon be home. The rest of her visit was wonderful, albeit too short.

Tuesday we met Tina in Stockholm and spent a couple hours wandering through Gamla Stan. We saw the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament building) and it was awe inspiring. We shopped in little shops and stopped to get the kidlet a hot dog from a street vendor. He asked where we were from and then told us all the people he loved from Canada, like Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. *smile* The kidlet spied this funny little mask in a shop. There were a number of animals but he wanted this one that looked like a panda bear. I took him in to get it but he spied the cutest little stuffed pig and wanted it for his dad, who loves pigs. He said he would have it instead of the mask, because he wanted it for pappa, so he got both for being so generous to offer to give up his treat for one for his dad. (yeah, I am a pushover of a mom *laugh*). I was thinking how much he was like my mom at that moment. She was generous to a fault at times. I have a picture of him in his mask that is cute. We went to Pizza Hut for lunch and he wanted a pizza, even though he had eaten a whole hot dog earlier. So I ordered him one and got nachos for myself, knowing I would eat the bulk of his pizza. Sure enough, he took one bite of pizza. *laugh* Aunt Maud got some souvenirs and I found some nice postcards as well as a number of new places to buy different ones.

Wednesday we went to öppna förskolan in the morning. Just before we left the kidlet went out into the kitchen. I was going to scold him for walking inside with his shoes on, but he made me laugh so hard I couldn’t. He went to the kitchen table where there was a lone chocolate chip cookie on a plate and said to the cookie “bye cookie, later I will be home and then I will eat you”. Where do kids think up things like that? *laugh* After playgroup we went to the centrum and picked up a few groceries then came home and had lunch. The second big laugh of the day came when he went in to the bathroom and then came out all excited with his new discovery. He discovered there was a hole in his underwear that he could use to pee without taking them off. He kept saying “mamma look, a hole!”. Aunt Maud was in tears over that one.

Thursday we went to Upplands Väsby to a baby shower for Beverly at Helenes’. It was such a nice afternoon. Besides Helene who was a wonderful hostess, there was Beverly and Lydia, Leslie and Lisa and Jacob. I hadn’t seen Lisa since early in her pregnancy and now her little guy is 11 months old. It was great fun and I know Aunt Maud was happy to meet them all. I had asked her to bring over the bottles of Johnsons’ baby products (shampoo, powder, baby wash and such) because I hadn’t seen them here and that smell is baby smell to people from North America. She also shopped for some baby gifts from herself and brought them along. She really is a sweetheart.

Friday, we shopped for a birthday gift for my fellows’ sister after we went to playgroup. When he got home from work we drove to Sköldinge to his uncles new home. We had a lovely dinner there of baked salmon and spent the night. Saturday we all went in to Katrineholm, which is a delightful city. We went back to Sköldinge for a bit and then headed home about 1600. When we arrived home at 1800 I threw together a mish mash for dinner. *laugh*

Sunday we did a bit of last minute shopping and then had dinner with my fellows’ parents. His mom made a smorgåstarta and it was wonderful. We got home and settled the kidlet into bed around 2100. Aunt Maud finished packing and we visited a bit before my eyes said it was time to sleep. *smile*

This morning we were up at 0500 and took Aunt Maud to the airport. She said we all didn’t have to come but we felt it would be easier for the kidlet to see her leave than to wake up to finding her gone. She checked in and we waited until about 0625 and then she went on through security and we went home. As we were going out, the kidlet was waving but as soon as we were out of sight, he said “Aunt Maud is sad” and then started to cry and said he was sad too. He cried on the way home but then he played here and we napped a bit. We all went in to Hässelby so I could clean and then came back and went to a birthday party. The kidlet was sad again in the afternoon about Aunt Maud leaving but decided he will phone her tomorrow. I must admit I cried as much as he did. *smile*

She just called to say she was home and had good flights. Now I am anxious to make a visit home, since I miss her already. *smile*

Visit update

May 14th, 2002

We are having a lovely time with Aunt Maud here. Her flight out of Toronto was delayed so she missed the connecting flight in London, but was able to get another 3 hours later. So she arrived at 1730 on Thursday. We picked her up, came home, had dinner and relaxed for the rest of the evening. The kidlet was thrilled to see her. So was I. *laugh*

Friday we walked about here so she could see the area we live in and then took a bus out to Eurostop and had McDonalds for lunch. We shopped some and then came home. She thinks all our food in tubes is cool and was amazed to see people coming out of the mall with cases of coffee (there was a sale on coffee by the case).

Saturday we packed up the car and headed towards the cottage. We first went to the centrum and got Bingo Lotto tickets, then went on to Rosersberg to see the castle there. I hadn’t seen it myself so it was fun and just a lovely spot. Then we went for pizza. Aunt Maud was astonished at how we eat pizza here and intrigued by the pizza itself and the pizza salad. *laugh* We went on to the cottage then and spent the night. We all played Bingo Lotto. The kidlet wanted to play too so Aunt Maud drew him his own card and it was hilarious to see him so intently marking it as he repeated the numbers being called.

Sunday we slept in some and then we went to Uppsala and wandered about in Gamla Uppsala. I had never been there before either and was amazed with the barrows. Have been taking lots of pictures as well.

Yesterday we went in the morning to öppna förskolan for an hour and then we went to have coffee with Wafaa, Marilyn, Saida and thier kids at Wafaa’s home. It was nice to have Aunt Maud meet the women I spend time with here at playgroup. In the afternoon we went to Sigtuna and saw the ruins of St. Olof’s, the town itself and the spot where the first coins were minted here. We had tea and cake at a cafe and had a generally fun filled day.

Today we are off to Stockholm and will wander in Gamla Stan. Tina will meet us at the central station and I am looking forward to that. The rest of the week is loosely planned out as we shall make a trip out to Steninge Slott, a trip in to Upplands Vasby for the shower and a trip to visit J&T down south.

Quick update

May 9th, 2002

We have been busy the past couple of days. Monday we did laundry and then I cleaned the balcony while the kidlet played outside at the “hus” (the play area outside our apartment). He loves to go out and play there without me, makes him feel like a big boy. But he also wants me in sight all the time he is out. *laugh* The weather has been absolutely lovely and he has spent a lot of time out. Tuesday was öppna förskolan followed by grocery shopping and more sorting of stuff, namely kidlet toys and mom and dad papers. Yesterday we shopped in the morning and then I went in to Aventyret and did the cleaning. I won’t be going back until after my aunt leaves.

So here it is Thursday morning. I have been up since just after 0600. Am doing a couple loads of wash just so everything is caught up and the last of the picking up here. After my coffee break, I will vacuum and then relax some until we go to pick up Aunt Maud at Arlanda at 1405. I can’t believe she will be here in just a few hours and am just so excited!

Shopping

May 6th, 2002

Friday was busy. We headed out to ICA Maxi first thing to pick up a few things I had collected coupons for and needed to get before today. Then we walked from there to Jysk to check out fold out beds. They only had the same one we already own, a fold out cot with springs. We caught the bus home and then after unloading groceries headed into Stockholm. There were a bunch of people handing out cans of the “refreshingly new” Coke Light. The kidlet and I got one each and then went on to MacDonald’s where he had his usual. We hopped on the subway and went on to work. Got home about 1930 and had dinner. The kidlet had slept some on the train and just would not settle. He was still fighting sleep at 2300, very unusual for him.

Saturday we slept in and since it was a rainy day, we stayed home and relaxed. It is nice to just do nothing occasionally. *smile* I had a four hour nap after lunch and the kidlet napped as well for a couple hours, so it was another night of him not settling at his usual bedtime. Eventually he fell asleep in our bed.

Sunday we went bed shopping. We went to Barkaby to IKEA and they were out of both the beds we wanted. One was a chair that folded out to a single bed and the other was a folding cot but with wooden slats instead of springs, which provide more support for the back. My fellow suggested we could go to Uppsala but I said no, we obviously were not meant to get another cot. So we shopped some and picked up a couple PS2 games, 3 dvd movies, one video and a new toaster. We did go to the bookstore at Stockholm Outlet Mall there, which is where I saw the big sign a few weeks saying they were going to have Jean Auels’ new book in stock April 29th. Well they were out of it yesterday. So I will have to wait a bit longer I guess … after 12 years of waiting I can manage a few more days. *laugh* We decided to go to Subway and pick up subs for lunch but on the way there we pulled in to have a look in Rusta. There was a big Jysk beside it and we took a chance and went in there bed hunting. Success at last! We got the cot with the wooden slats on it. That was the end of shopping except for our Subway excursion where we got a Steak & Cheese and a Meatball sub. This is the first time I have been to Subway here and it was really nice to have a sub after a couple years without. Nice as they were though, they just did not measure up to Subs Plus. *laugh*

Once we were home the guys played car games and then after the kidlet was settled we watched a movie. We tested the new toaster and the cot also. So it was a fun and productive day. We put gel and then orange spray in the kidlets hair and he thought he was the coolest kid. *laugh* I think we will buy a couple other colours this week, so he can be really punky.

Today we have laundry time and I have some cleaning to do. So it is off to the grind now. *smile*
